Tarmac is short for tarmacadam, a road surfacing material made by combining macadam surfaces, tar, and sand. The mixture is then laid and compacted using a vibrating roller to form a smooth and neat finish.
Tarmac or Asphalt is certainly the most cost effective way to surface an area. Prices can range from £20 – £100 per m2 depending on access, complexity of project and existing base. Coloured and commercial tarmac can be significantly more.
A residential tarmac driveway typically needs a 50-70mm binder course plus a 20-30mm wearing course on top, around 70–100mm in total. Areas taking heavier vehicles need more. We carry out a full site survey as part of every quote, so we can advise on the exact depth and specification your driveway needs.
Tarmac is cheaper and quicker to lay, concrete is more expensive but slightly longer-lasting if reinforced; tarmac is more flexible so resists cracking from ground movement better than concrete.
Moss on tarmac is fairly common and is best treated twice yearly using a specialist moss killer.
Most tarmac is not permeable although there are specialised, permeable tarmac systems available. They can be expensive and not suitable for a long term approach.
Tarmac is best cleaned using a specialised brush system that gently scrubs the surface with warm water and cleaning chemicals.
Tarmac pertly cures in 24 hours although can take significantly longer in the warmer months. In most cases it is best after a full season on weather changes.
Tarmac needs to be laid quickly, compacted with the right equipment while still hot, and requires a properly prepared sub-base. Most DIY attempts fail at compaction, leading to early cracking and potholing. It’s one of the driveway materials least suited to DIY.

A dropped kerb or vehicle crossover is the dipped or lowered kerb that allows you to access your property or business from the road by driving across the pavement.
It’s a legal requirement to have a constructed dropped kerb as it is an offence to drive across a footway to access your property without one. This is because it may cause damage to the footway or the services (gas, electric, water) underneath.
