Project Overview

SGS Surfacing recently completed a residential surfacing project in Bolney, West Sussex, transforming an existing garage space into a practical new parking area while upgrading the access road. The project focused on improving layout, durability, and usability, delivering a high-quality finish tailored for daily residential use.

Key Highlights:

  • A smooth, hard-wearing driveway and parking area capable of withstanding regular residential use
  • Improved access and turning functionality
  • Clean, durable, and visually appealing finish that integrates seamlessly with the property

The Finished Project

A suburban street with freshly paved, wet asphalt and white lane markings, lined by houses and fences, extending toward a distant red car.

Scope of Works

The project involved a comprehensive set of works across 128 m² of extended area, including:

  • Garage demolition and waste removal via an authorised disposal agent (no asbestos present)
  • Excavation of the former garage area and the extended driveway run
  • Installation of membrane and zero fines 6F4 crushed concrete, with additional drainage run if required
  • 38 m drainage run piped into existing outlet
  • Edging setts installed along all unsupported sides, including a new turning area
  • Scrape and shape of existing surfaces to ensure correct levels and suitable depths
  • Sub-base finished with primary grade Type 1 aggregate
  • Hand-laid and compacted asphalt surfacing:
    – AC20 dense binder at 50 mm
    – AC10 dense binder at 35 mm

Challenges & Solutions

  • Complex excavation and sub-base preparation: Careful grading and installation of reinforced sub-base layers ensured durability across both new and existing areas.
  • Drainage and runoff: A 38 m drainage run and additional provisions prevented water pooling, protecting both surface and sub-base.
  • Edge and turning area stability: Installation of setts around unsupported sides and the turning area provided long-term structural integrity.

Team & Expertise

The SGS Surfacing team delivered the project with precision and attention to detail, ensuring safe demolition, effective groundworks, and high-quality surfacing throughout.

Outcome

The Bolney project highlights our ability to deliver residential surfacing solutions that combine durability, practicality, and aesthetics. From careful demolition and excavation to hand-laid asphalt surfacing, the finished project provides a functional and long-lasting upgrade to the client’s access and parking areas.
