Surfacing & Drainage

Having been awarded the surfacing contract for Thermo Fisher Scientific in Horsham we embarked on a very large and complicated surfacing project. The brief was to install additional drainage to an area where water pooling was causing a health and safety issue along with the complete surfacing of a large overflow car park.

The project was predominantly Asphalt laying although we had a long run of drainage channels to install along with a water run off pipe. The project was to be completed over the course of a long weekend as the site needed to remain open and operational to the 600 + staff.

Friday saw us removing the surface layers of tarmac using a planning machine, cleaning and sweeping the areas then excavating the channel for the drainage channels and pipework. This drainage provision had to be installed the same day using rapid set cement to ensure it could be resurfaced the following day.

Saturday was an early start for the whole team working under flood lights to ensure the machinery was filled with fuel ready for a long day. The first load of tarmac was due at 07.30 am. The 7 man team worked tirelessly all day with the last load of tarmac being laid at 17.45 pm.

Over the day day period we managed to install 30 m of channel drains, 45 m of underground pipework and 280 t of Asphalt. Big thanks to Aggregate Industries for getting 14 lorries full of tarmac delivered on time and to the SGS team for working a full 12 hour day.
