Resurfacing Project at Fishers Clinical Services

In December 2024, SGS Surfacing delivered a durable, industrial-grade resurfacing at Fishers Clinical Services.

Scope of Work:
SGS Surfacing was commissioned to undertake a large-scale resurfacing project at Fishers Clinical Services in Horsham ( Repeat Client). This project involved the excavation, drainage installation, and resurfacing of two areas totalling approximately 1,000 m². Our objective was to deliver a durable and long-lasting surface capable of withstanding heavy industrial use.

Project Overview:
The project was divided into two main sections:

  1. Primary Area (575 m² with Failing Sub-Base):
  • Excavated the entire area to an average depth of 500 mm, removing all waste for recycling.
  • Compacted the sub-surface and installed a 100 gsm non-woven membrane for ground stabilisation.
  • Laid and compacted 250 mm of reduced fines 6F2 concrete cobbles to reinforce the foundation.
  • Installed 27 m of MUFLE D400 channel drains on 150 mm beds of high-strength concrete, with concrete shoulders where necessary.
  • Connected all new drainage runs to the existing outlet system.
  • Conducted a laser survey to ensure accurate levels and compacted 100 mm of primary grade, Type 3 aggregate.
  • Machine-laid 80 mm of AC32 road base followed by 50 mm of AC10 industrial-grade stone mastic asphalt for a smooth and durable finish.

2. Secondary Area (405 m² with Stable Sub-Base):

  • Machine-planed the damaged top surface to a depth of approximately 40 mm.
  • Applied a K140 tack coat to promote adhesion between layers.
  • Machine-laid 50 mm of AC10 industrial-grade stone mastic asphalt to provide a durable, smooth finish.

Challenges and Solutions:
One of the primary challenges was addressing the failing sub-base in the larger area while ensuring the project was completed before year-end. By utilising advanced laser surveying and high-strength materials, we ensured proper grading and long-term stability.

Weather conditions during December posed an additional challenge, but our team carefully scheduled work phases to mitigate delays. Our use of high-strength concrete and industrial-grade asphalt guaranteed a surface capable of withstanding heavy industrial traffic.
