Project Overview

SGS Surfacing successfully delivered a large-scale 3,400 m² surfacing and groundworks project at Farney Close School, Bolney. With a strict deadline to complete all works before the students returned, our team worked efficiently to resurface key areas, improve drainage, and expand parking facilities while ensuring health, safety, and environmental compliance at every stage.

The Finished Project

Scope of Works

Drainage & Groundworks

  • Excavated trenches for new drainage provision into the pond, connecting to road gullies.
  • Installed trench membranes, backfilled with shingle, and finished with topsoil and seed.
  • Removed and recycled all waste materials responsibly

Car Park & Access Roads

  • Excavated and extended car park areas, including a 1 m carriageway extension (745m²).
  • Installed vehicular-grade membrane and compacted crushed concrete.
  • Constructed oak retaining walls, edging kerbs, and a new dropped kerb section.
  • Installed road gullies for improved surface water management
  • Hand-laid a 60 mm layer of AC20 dense binder asphalt.

Surface Preparation & Overlay

  • Prepared existing surfaces with sweeping and K140 primer application.
  • Machine-laid 2,543 m² with a 40 mm AC10 dense binder asphalt.
  • Provided for new speed humps and carried out additional line marking to maximise space.

Accessibility & Additional Works

  • Constructed three new disabled bays (124 m²) and a rounded section for improved access.
  • Installed 20 replacement concrete path edgings and new lighting rods (tested and certified).
  • Removed and reinstated earthing rods, plus stump grinding to clear obstructive tree roots.
  • Finished sub-base layers with Type 1 aggregate, hand-laid and compacted AC20 (60 mm) and AC10 (40 mm).

Challenges & Solutions

  • Tight Deadline: With completion required before the school term began, our project team worked to a strict programme with daily progress checks to stay on track.
  • Multiple Work Areas: Coordinated phasing ensured continuous access routes while different zones (car park, access road, disabled bays) were completed.
  • Drainage Issues: Bespoke solutions, including gully installation and pond connection, improved long-term site resilience.

Outcome

The project was delivered on time and to specification, leaving Farney Close School with a refreshed and functional site ready for the new term. The works have improved traffic flow, created additional parking (including disabled bays), and upgraded site safety with drainage, surfacing, and speed control measures. All waste was removed and recycled, and the site was left clean and ready for use. The school now benefits from a durable and reliable surfacing solution designed to handle long-term use.
