Supporting The Dyers’ Almshouse Charity Parking & Drainage Upgrades, London

Service: Car Parks|Commercial|Land Drainage

Project Overview

SGS Surfacing was pleased to return to The Dyers’ Almshouse Charity CIO, a valued repeat client, to deliver improvements at their property. Building on our previous work at this site and at their Blackheath, London property, this project focused on enhancing parking provision and resolving drainage challenges to ensure a safe, functional, and resilient environment for residents and visitors.

Key Highlights:

  • Safe and practical parking areas with improved drainage
  • A clean, functional finish suitable for residents and visitors
  • Resilient surfaces designed for long-term performance, reducing future maintenance needs
  • Continued support for a charity that provides essential housing and care

Scope of Works

Covering 215 m² across two parking areas, the works included:

  • Excavation of existing shingle and contaminated sub-base
  • Installation of new drainage: 300 mm yard-style gullies and piped outlet
  • Membrane installation and reinforcement with Type 1 sub-base aggregate
  • Hand-laid surfacing:
    – AC20 dense binder at 50 mm
    – AC10 dense binder at 30 mm
  • Emergency drainage installation alongside the property
  • Localised cut-out and resurfacing using AC6 dense binder for targeted repairs

Challenges & Solutions

  • Drainage improvements: Installation of new gullies and a piped outlet resolved existing water pooling issues, ensuring a safer and more durable parking surface.
  • Sub-base contamination: Excavation and reinforcement with Type 1 aggregate created a stable foundation capable of supporting daily vehicle use.
  • Long-term durability: The combination of AC20 and AC10 dense binder, with localised AC6 repairs, provides a smooth, hard-wearing surface for years to come.

Team & Expertise

Our team’s experience in residential and charity projects ensured the works were carried out efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to the community. Strong collaboration with the client allowed us to deliver both technical and practical improvements.

Outcome

The Dyers’ Almshouse Charity project highlights SGS Surfacing’s commitment to long-term client relationships and delivering high-quality surfacing solutions that balance durability, functionality, and community needs. From drainage upgrades to hand-laid asphalt surfacing, every aspect was designed to provide a safe and reliable environment for the residents it serves.
