How To Choose The Right Paving For Your Home

With so many materials on the market, it can be difficult to know what is the best paving for your property. We’ve put together some of our top tips for you to consider, whether you’re thinking about a new patio, path or driveway.

When planning a change to the landscaping of your garden or driveway, there are lots of things to consider to ensure that your outdoor area looks good. With so many materials on the market, it can be difficult to know what is the best paving for your property.

We’ve put together some of our top tips to think about when choosing paving for your outdoor area to help you make the right choice:

Think about wear and tear

Considering the purpose of the paving is the first step. Different paving works better and withstands different weights and pressures. For example, if the paving you are choosing is going to be used for a driveway, you need to be looking at stronger, thicker paving slabs, as normal slabs would not be able to withstand the weight of cars driving and parking on them.

If your paving is just going to be used for the garden and will only have people walking over it, then there is no need to worry about the strength and thickness of the slabs as standard slabs will be enough.

Which style is right for your home?

When looking at replacing the paving in your garden, you need to take into consideration the coordination with the rest of the garden and the overall look you’re creating. Take inspiration from other areas of your home and see if there are any features, such as walls, that the paving needs to match. It is also worth looking at the bricks used to build your home and choosing paving that complements them.

If there are already a lot of strong colours in your garden, look at more neutral, subtle tones of paving to ensure that it doesn’t clash. Or, if you want a paving area that stands out and makes a statement, you can add notes of colour throughout to really bring it to life.

Consider different sizes

The size of your area can make a huge impact on the style of paving slabs that you use. For example, if you have a small garden then it is best to use smaller slabs. Larger paving slabs in small gardens tend to drown out the rest of the garden and make them look even smaller. The same can be said for narrow spaces; wide paving slabs will make the area look a lot narrower and less inviting.

If you have a larger garden, it may be a good idea to consider large paving slabs as having a large surface area to cover can be far more labour intensive when laying small paving slabs. This would increase the cost of installation.
